Junya Murakami

Representative Director, Nayoro Shimbun / Hokkaido-Certified Outdoor Guide

As Representative Director of Nayoro Shimbun — a regional newspaper founded in 1947 — Murakami covers Nayoro, Bifuka, and Shimokawa through its print edition and the news site Dohoku-net, delivering news rooted in northern Hokkaido. In February 2026, he signed a comprehensive business partnership with PR TIMES, the first such mutual content and distribution tie-up between a Japanese regional newspaper and a major press release service. He is also a Hokkaido-certified outdoor guide (summer and winter mountain), working since 2015 across the Daisetsuzan range, Dohoku, Nayoro, and Horokanai, where he offers mountain travel combined with map reading, fire-starting, and weather forecasting — skills that serve both outdoor fundamentals and disaster preparedness. He holds certifications as a Nature Observation and Protection Instructor and MEDIC First Aid Basicplus. A reporter's view and a guide's view — one region seen through two lenses — Murakami takes up the role of capturing the small moments that accumulate across Dohoku as north by north unfolds, reporting them with the closest possible local eye and delivering them outward in words and record.

Nobuhiko Tanabe

Photographer / Videographer / DJ

Born in Suginami, Tokyo. Since 2017, Tanabe — known as NB — has photographed the UCI Cyclocross World Championships and the broader European race scene, becoming one of Japan's leading chroniclers of the sport. He relocated to Dohoku's Nakagawa Town in 2024, and in the summer of 2025 held his first Hokkaido solo exhibition, Green & White, at 01. Outdoor & Life Shop in Sapporo's Soen neighborhood — a body of work made after the move, through cycling, fishing, and skiing. Bikes, fish, skis, music: the eye he brings to Dohoku air is the one he has lent to the record of north by north. The moment an activity ends, it begins turning into memory — and NB's camera returns to participants, afterward, the expression they didn't know they wore and the texture of a landscape they only half noticed.

Kensuke Suzuki

Outdoor Brand Operator / Event Producer

Born 1984 in Chiba City, Chiba. After university, Suzuki worked in apparel sales before joining the Japan office of BIRKENSTOCK, the German comfort-footwear brand developed from a medical starting point. Through that work he built a foundation in footwear and foot counseling. Further years at international fashion and footwear companies followed, and he has since become independent in the outdoor business. Centered on his own outdoor brand, he runs a deliberately multi-layered practice across Dohoku: outdoor-event styling and operations, camp experience programs and bonfire dinners, food event production, and foot-care counseling. Within north by north, he takes up the role of fitting each experience with the right setting and the right surround. Event styling and operations, food planning, and an uncommon footcare layer he adds himself — by arranging the perimeter of a tour, he lets its center stand up.

Asato Shibuya

Hunter / Largo Inc. / XIMERA Inc.

Born September 1999 in Hidaka Village, Kochi Prefecture. After visiting Shimokawa on a relocation tour, Shibuya joined the town's Industry Promotion Division in February 2023 as a wildlife-management officer through the Local Vitalization Cooperator program. For three years he worked alongside the local hunting association on wildlife response. He remains active in the hunting association and keeps his relationship with the mountains intact. After three years facing wildlife in the field in Shimokawa, he has moved from the side that meets the animal to the side that builds the local table. As someone who knows both ends — what comes down from the mountain and what goes onto the shelf — he takes up the role of supporting the food side of north by north's experiences from within the production and supply chain. Drums and mountains fill his off hours.

Yuto Urabe

Hunter / Cook

Born December 2001 in Kumaishi, Yakumo, Hokkaido. In 2025, while still a student at Rakuno Gakuen University, Urabe moved to Nakagawa as a Local Vitalization Cooperator. What began in 2023 as hunting grew into a full operation once he experienced the Ezo deer population and its potential as food firsthand, and he now runs a hunting-to-retail business covering capture, butchering, processing, and sale. Together with fellow cooperators in Nakagawa, he also runs a food service, and at events he serves Ezo deer he has taken and prepared himself. Rifle, knife, and pan all sit on the same continuous line. At 24, with mountain-to-table carried through by one pair of hands, he becomes the creator who brings what the Nakagawa wilderness yields all the way to the place where people eat — taking up the role of supporting, directly from the mountain, the plate that follows an activity at north by north's Nakagawa outpost. Fishing, foraging for wild vegetables, and backcountry skiing in the winter fill the rest.

Masahiko Yokoi

Masahiko Yokoi

Shimokawa Regional Industry Cooperative

Born and raised in Shimokawa, Hokkaido. After graduating from university in 2014, Yokoi worked as a health information manager at a municipal hospital in Hokkaido. A deep attachment to his hometown, combined with the realization that the Shimokawa Regional Industry Cooperative was doing unusual and genuinely rare work, led him to his U-turn move. In October 2022 he joined the cooperative, convinced that "keeping this work alive will serve Shimokawa," and committed to contributing to the town's development from a young age. Guided by the philosophy of "reviving the hometown through product development that makes the fullest use of local resources," he now manufactures and develops health foods, supplements, cosmetics, and agricultural materials from useful regional plants such as kumazasa bamboo grass, Japanese knotweed, and wood vinegar. His practice also includes turning previously discarded resources — asparagus offcuts, out-of-spec tomatoes — into revenue, a monetization of the mottainai ethic, and creating flexible work opportunities through bamboo-grass harvesting that lets people in their 70s and 80s take part. Within north by north, he takes on the role of translating the gifts of the Shimokawa forest into the language of food and health. Camping, mountains, and snowboarding fill his off hours.

Shunya Izumi

Shunya Izumi

Nakagawa Regional Development Corporation

Born 1994 in Sapporo. During university, Izumi studied abroad in Canada and the Philippines, picking up English and a broader sense of what different lives can look like. After graduation he worked in roles that drew on that — overseas sales at a noodle company, managing a language school — and through three career moves built out his practice across sales, web direction, and marketing. The pandemic pushed him to pursue specialization in earnest, leading him into region-development support across Hokkaido and the operation of training programs for JICA trainees. While based in Sapporo, he encountered Nakagawa and was drawn in by the closeness between people and nature there, and by the kind of social design that only a small municipality can actually put into practice. In May 2025 he moved to the town as a Local Vitalization Cooperator, joining the Nakagawa Regional Development Corporation, where he works on tourism and regional development, the Tokyo satellite shop, e-commerce, hometown-tax promotion, and local product development. Drawing on the pace of time shaped by the Teshio River and the broadleaf forests, and on the quiet power of wild herbs, he is working to grow Nakagawa into a place of healing and renewal. Within north by north, he takes up the practical work of tourism-led regional development and the gradual expansion of Nakagawa's community of ongoing connection. Reading and basketball fill his off hours.

Megumi Kito

Megumi Kito

MK Farm Hokkaido / Mama-no-En LLC

Born in Narashino City, Chiba. After marriage, Kito spent twenty years raising three children in Saitama, always carrying the quiet tension of wanting to hold both family and work as equally important. Through Mama-no-En LLC, she worked on creating spaces that connect women's dormant skills to society — navigating, as a fellow insider, the layered barriers of childcare, caregiving, and community roles that women so often carry. The Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, and then the pandemic: through these large social disturbances, what came into focus was a way of living in which people design their own work and life with their own hands. In 2022, with "raising children and farming" as her guiding theme, she moved with her family to Shimokawa, Hokkaido. She entered the world of agriculture with no prior experience, completed three years of training, and in 2025, at the landmark age of 50, took over farmland of her own — beginning a new chapter as a fruit tomato farmer under the name MK Farm Hokkaido. Living out the belief that "wherever you are, at whatever age, a person can still change," she continues to take on the next challenges in Shimokawa's rich nature. Within north by north, she takes up the role of placing the fruit tomatoes grown in Shimokawa's soil at the very center of the food experience.

Shunpei Kuroda

Doctoral Program, Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Kobe University

Born April 2001 in Soka City, Saitama. Kuroda completed his master's program at the Graduate School of Agriculture at Hokkaido University before advancing to the doctoral program at Kobe University's Graduate School of Agricultural Science, where he continues his research. The starting point for everything that followed was a lecture during his time at Hokkaido University, where he first learned about the people who had chosen to relocate to northern Hokkaido and were now building work and lives of their own there. Drawn to the very act of leaving the city to deliberately move to the countryside, he made his first visit to Dohoku in 2023. He has been visiting the region continuously ever since, supporting the operational side of local events — including the hosting of volunteers — while carrying out fieldwork that combines research with hands-on practice. His research focuses on the mechanisms by which newcomers come to belong to a place through their connections with local people, and he pursues those mechanisms by stepping inside them himself. Drawn to north by north's approach of turning visitors from "guests" into "members of the community," he joined the team in April 2026. His role is to record and analyze the practice of how people first connect with a region and gradually come to share its life as full participants — and to feed those findings back to the region itself. Football (cheering for Urawa Reds), baseball (Hanshin Tigers), and Perfume fill his off hours.
